In the complex perfume market, big brands are constantly updating their products, while new brands are emerging, and competition is becoming more and more intense. What kind of brand image does Jean Paul Gaultier have in the eyes of consumers? We spoke to 3 fashion insiders about their views on Jean Paul Gaultier

Yoann C(stylist)
Jean Paul Gaultier is brand that i Know since I was a child, it’s always been "there ", in tv, magazines ect. It’s a very well known brand. What i like about Jean Paul Gaultier is that it always brings me surprise. I’ve never seen any design like this before, it proposes avant-garde silhouette, very extravagant. Jean Paul Gaultie was very visionnary cause he is the one who start to let men wear skirt.
I really like the design of its perfume bottle, it’s the first brand to use human’s body as a symbol, the smell of “le male” is very unique. However, this brand can be seen everywhere in Sephora around the world. It is too popular for me, which may not be suitable for consumers who pursue uniqueness. I prefer a little niche perfume, that would be less possibility to have the same smell with others

I don't know much about the ready-to-wear collection of this brand and it doesn't feel like it's my style. But I do use Jean Paul Gaultier's perfume. To me, its perfume is more suitable for boys, just boys, not men. In terms of smell, it's very neutral and can be used by both men and women. But its perfume bottles are very gender-specific, women's perfume uses female thighs, female body elements, men's perfume design is naked men. It's fun for me.
In my eyes, the brand has always had a kind of irreverent, free-spirited,sometimes full of desire. The message the brand wants to convey seems very elusive, but at the same time, I feel that the brand actually has been always delivering the same value: respect for diversity. It's an both strange and amazing feeling, I don't know how to express.

I recently did a shoot with Jean Paul Gaultier's new team. As far as I know the tonality of the brand has been slowly moving towards a very dramatic style. The photographer I cooperated with this time has worked with Alexaner Wang before. Her style is exaggerated and crazy.I think crazy is what Jean Paul Gaultier has always been, but now Jean Paul Gaultier slowly began to transition to younger.
I deliberately observed Jean Paul Gaultier's Instagram before shooting, and their post gave me a feeling of drama, full of new retro feeling. You can feel that they are constantly trying to recreate the brand's distinctive sailor elements, while at the same time paying homage to the classic, trying to make something that is close to young people.
